Rings of Level Playing

This is one of the mods that means the most to me, because it was co-written by Grumpy. He posted a script in the Construction Set section of the official forums and advised that members could call it from the console. I found this “immersion-breaking” and asked if I could attach it to a scripted ring. I knew he was sick (he passed away shortly after), so was touched beyond words when he replied and challenged me to make more rings – one for each major playing style (thief/mage/warrior) as well as various levels, so we ended up with nine rings. Grumpy was such an all-round awesome human being! This is the mod of mine I have used the most, and I hope you find it even half as helpful as I have.

Based on Grumpy’s instant level scripts, this tweak adds a series of rings to the Census & Excise building in Seyda Neen, from which the player can select a choice of level (10, 20 or 50) and character class. Extensive readme and self-customisation instructions.

4. What It Does

This is not the most hugely original mod ever, but it is rather handy if you have played the game through six times and just want a clean, high-level character to test a mod with. Briefly, this mod attaches Grumpy’s level 20 script, in various modified forms, to 9 rings that can be equipped to instantly raise the character’s level.

There are two .esp files, each of which adds a choice of rings to the table in the Seyda Neen Census and Excise Office:

Rings of Level Playing.esp

Choice of 7 rings:

– Level 10 Thief
– Level 10 Mage
– Level 10 Guard

These will change the player’s stats to those of an average level 10 character of the Thief, Mage or Guard classes. Will also add relevant items to that level, i.e. lockpicks to the thief, armor to the guard, etc.

– Level 20 Thief
– Level 20 Mage
– Level 20 Guard

These will change the player’s stats to those of an average level 20 character of the Thief, Sorceror or Guard classes. Will also add relevant items to that level, i.e. lockpicks to the thief, armor to the guard, etc.

– Level 50 Nerevarine

This will change the player’s stats to those of an average level Guard 50 character. Also fills in relevant journal entries to make the player the Nerevarine, and head of all major factions. Banishes three dialog entries to ToddTest cell to prevent “You shouldn’t be in here” conversation at strongholds. Removes major NPCs who would have died or left in the course of many quests. Equipment added to player includes Sunder, Keening and Wraithguard.

– Level 50 Tribunal (Rings of Level Playing All TB BM.ESP ONLY)

This will change the player’s stats to those of an average level Guard 50 character.  Also fills in relevant journal entries to make the player the Nerevarine, and head of all major factions. Banishes three dialog entries to ToddTest cell to prevent “You shouldn’t be in here” conversation at strongholds. Removes major NPCs who would have died or left in the course of many quests. Equipment added to player includes Sunder, Keening and Wraithguard, plus Hopesfire and Trueflame.  Additional journal entries etc. to finish main Tribunal quest. Additional chest added to office including full sets of Ebony, Royal Guard and Her Hands uniforms.

– Level 50 BM (Rings of Level Playing All TB BM.ESP ONLY)

This will change the player’s stats to those of an average level Guard 50 character.  Also fills in relevant journal entries to make the player the Nerevarine, and head of all major factions. Banishes three dialog entries to ToddTest cell to prevent “You shouldn’t be in here” conversation at strongholds. Removes major NPCs who would have died or left in the course of many quests. Equipment added to player includes Sunder, Keening and Wraithguard, plus Hopesfire, Trueflame, and major weapons gathered during Bloodmoon quests. Additional journal entries etc. to finish main Tribunal and Bloodmoon quests.  Additional chest added to office including full sets of Ebony, Royal Guard and Her Hands uniforms, plus ice and bearskin equipment. Raven Rock is fully built, including the Factor’s Estate.

**** THE REALLY IMPORTANT BIT YOU HAVE TO READ ****

To use the rings, go through the character generation stages as usual. When you have picked up your papers, gone through the unlocked door and gone into the “chargen stuff room”, look on the table with the dagger, bread, note, etc. You will see the rings. Pick up the ring of your choice. Continue through the rest of the chargen process – you will need to do this or you will not have your full functionality e.g. journal, etc. Once you have handed in your papers, collected your directions to Caius Cosades’ house and walked out of the door into Seyda Neen, your character is fully generated.

**IF YOU PLAN TO MAKE ANY CHANGES TO YOUR APPEARANCE USING THE ENABLERACEMENU COMMAND, YOU MUST DO SO BEFORE EQUIPPING THE RING OR YOU WILL LOSE YOUR BOOSTED STATS**

Now you may equip the ring. You will instantly see that your character has high-level stats, but is still showing as level 1. Don’t worry about this – it is a quirk of the game – you are level 10 (or 20 or 50) as far as the game is concerned. The new level should appear the next time you load your savegame. A similar problem will occur if you equip the Bloodmoon ring
– you won’t show up as Factor but everyone will say, “What can I do for you, Factor?” as normal. If you chose one of the level 50 rings, you can now go back inside and loot through the chest as desired.

The ring scripts are not exhaustive. For example, if you will still have to kill the bad wizard in Mournhold if you want his house. The ice palace and Fort Frostmoth are not destroyed, though Carnius is gone and the Colony is complete. The statue at Plaza Brindisi Dorom is destroyed, in order to allow the character to enter the Dwemer ruins. Other than that, the magic stones are doing their thing on Solstheim (if you use the Bloodmoon ring) and the ghostfence – and Dagoth Ur – are gone (if you use any of the level 50 rings), which is the main point of doing so. And, yes, you will still be greeted as the Nerevarine.

The choice of two .esp files is because the second, Rings of Level Playing All TB BM.ESP, changes the scripts of the Bloodmoon and Tribunal creatures and as such breaks both Tribunal and Bloodmoon quests. The only way to ensure that the creatures (Almalexia, the werewolves, fabricants) don’t appear when you don’t want them to is to ensure that they never appear at all. Please only use the Rings of Level Playing All TB BM.ESP if you are not planning on playing the Tribunal or Bloodmoon main quests. The Nerevarine Level 50 ring is available in both .esp files for the purpose of providing a high level character to play through the Tribunal and Bloodmoon main quests.
